Quality Manager


Applies the principles of product quality planning, evaluation, and control in support of the manufacturing and installation operations of the organization.

Responsible for applicable systems related to plant customer issues such as corrective action requests, supplier corrective action requests, nonconforming material reports, etc.

Leads containment activities.

Facilitates continuous improvement quality activities to reduce the potential for defects, and ensures continual improvement in process and product design.

Ensures products and process development meet quality standards.

Identifies problems, prioritizes actions, leads or participates in Six Sigma projects.

Participates in change management activities by verifying products and processes, developing key measures, analyzing data for decision support, and presenting results to plant leadership.

Leads audits of processes and quality systems.

Works with purchasing to improve the quality of purchased parts.

Serves as a quality technical resource to other functional areas.

May coach and mentor less experienced quality engineers.

Product Or Service Familiarization - Understanding of the product line or services of the specific business of which the person is a part (i.e., plant, performance cell, etc).

Quality System Development, Implementation And Verification - Identify and integrate common elements such as design and process control, management responsibility, document control etc. Quality auditing planning, preparation and execution.

Vpi (Value Package Introduction) - Understanding of the Cummins VPI process, its phases, cross functional activities and responsibilities.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in required.


Intermediate level of relevant work experience required.

Directs multiple teams that plan, track, and report on delivered quality and reliability of products or subsystems produced in a plant.

Ensures that all issues as reported through corrective action requests, supplier corrective action requests, or nonconforming materials reports

are addressed in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Solves highly complex quality issues as they are escalated.

Identifies and coaches resources necessary to achieve long-term and short-term business goals.

Identifies and defines emerging or potential problems and prioritizes effective containment through work with product quality teams.

Identifies and works with functional areas to ensure that adequate resources are available and other issues are resolved to deliver on-time

and contain costs.

Aiag Core Tools Expectation - AIAG Core tools are seen as being fundamental in support of the automotive preferred quality system ISO/TS

16949, and delivering satisfactory product quality.

Capability Analysis - Capability Analysis is the study of how well the performance of a product or process meets its specifications. In capability

analysis, various capability indices (Z, Pp, Ppk, Cp, Cpk, DPU, DPMO) are calculated to determine the level of compliance (or capability).

Topics include Six Sigma process capability, statistical assumptions, traditional process capability indices, variable capability studies, shortterm

and long-term capability studies, non-normal capability data analysis, and the use of MINITAB to perform capability analysis. This skill is

a module in DMAIC, DFSS, and TDFSS training. It can also be developed through the class Capability-User (ENG0345).
